Ezeani – the chief priest – broke the kolanut and cast its lobes on the floor. He observed the scatter pattern, turned to us and began to reveal some personal things about each of us. I was skeptical, wondering what sort of game he was up to. Upon capturing our interest, further investigation
became necessary. Turn by turn, each of us took a kolanut. Whilst facing the sun, asked the kolanut to reveal answers to our inquiries. Ezeani broke the kolanut and cast it on the floor.

to interview Ezeani for his book project, I was amazed at the unfolding drama because of the high accuracy of the information revealed.
Ezeani, in answer to our bewilderment, explained that the whole ritual was based on the language of the universe as spoken by the kolanut. The kolanut merely completes a communication protocol
involving Anyanwu– the sun, Ani – the earth, the diviner and the supplicant.

The sun and the earth consist of a large database: past, present and future. The kolanut is used by the diviner to access data concerning the petitioner. Keywords in form of questions aid in querying this natural database. The scatter pattern of the kolanut returns a code, which the diviner interprets for the supplicant.

The Igbos are adepts at embedding knowledge in rituals. Ọjị or kolanut plays a central role in Igbo traditional rituals. It is commonly used to pray, and eaten by all present in Holy Communion. In this sharing, the ancestors or the dead and the spirits –both the good and evil, partake.

In the ritual of Ọjị lies the mystery of the beginning and an understanding of the oneness of life. The breaking of the kolanut signifies inception, and is used to mark the beginning of an event or occasion. Ọjị tells us that the world was made the same way the kolanut is broken. It tells us that the
‘One Thing’ that was in the beginning became everything else. So that everything in creation is just a form of the ‘One thing’. Divinity, if eternal, cannot be less or more. The stone is therefore no less divine than the tree, or is the tree less divine than a human being.

The nature of the Ọjị – the many in one or Elohim – shows clearly that creation in all its forms consist of one substance- Chi. All aspects of creation are imbued with this divine essence without which they cannot exist. Just like the western scientist’s elements which consist of atoms, but differ in appearance as the subatomic particles vary, so different life forms consist of the same basic block –Chi na Eke or simply Chi.

The mystic whilst praying with the kolanut, prays to no one in particular. He simply invokes his own divinity and oneness with God. Prayer, to the man of understanding, is simply re-enacting the drama of the beginning: an imitation of God. Whatever rituals he performs is to enable him or her enter into the elusive but creative state commonly referred to as faith. The Christian Bible captures this so succinctly, through faith [,] we understand that [,] the worlds were framed by the word of God4.


Strange as it may appear, the future belongs to those who understand the language of the universe as spoken by the Ọjị: an immutable truth propelling an evolving world in sync with the Spirit of the
cosmos – the Spirit of unity and of wholeness.
