Iyi-Uwa: Oath Before Birth.

A man went to a Dibia for divination to make enquires on why life is hard for him. The Dibia after casting his Afa system revealed to the man that the cause of his nemesis is the result of an oath he took before reincarnation to live his life as a poor man as a way to gain experience before transitioning back.

As funny as this revelation is there are some facts to this story which is rooted in the cultural and spiritual dictates of Ndi-Igbo. Logically others may perceive this as a culture shock but from an Igbo perspective, our assertion on this is completely valid.

Iyi-Uwa is an important concept that has a deeper influence on our lives and existence. it’s a cosmic contract centering every one of us to our purpose or akalauwa. Iyi-uwa is also known as the Oath taken before birth or reincarnation, it is a determining factor in a person’s life and purpose(Akala-Uwa). 

The signing of this cosmic contract is done by an individual before Akpu-Okalete(A spirit pathway) towards reincarnation. There are determining factors that can affect the kind of Iyi(Oath) that was taken by an individual.

For instance;

A woman may have been a victim of domestic violence and vowed to never be married in this current reincarnation. When this is done, the woman in this reincarnation wouldn’t fancy the idea of marriage and this would affect her interaction with the opposite sex.

This also occurs in a situation where a person suffered greatly as a result of poverty this could lead the individual into taking an Oath that is inclined towards wealth at an early age. The influence of this Oath on a person’s life can be either good or bad, hence the need to re-examine it through Afa to determine the right course of action.

Ivo-iyi uwa: This is a process of uprooting the physical manifestation of the Iyi-Uwa. It is the process of rewriting a person’s cosmic contract. It’s also important to note that each Oath taken was done for a particular reason or purpose which binds a person to a particular existence and spiritual elements. With this in mind, the uprooting of Iyi-uwa should be handled with care.

This physical manifestation of Iyi-uwa is usually found buried at the root of an ancestral spirit tree or sacred spaces that usually exist in family spaces or it can be buried at the bank of a community river also known as Mmiri Chi Uwa.

In conclusion, Iyi-uwa is an intricate part of a person’s life journey and the solution to a person’s nemesis and problems. The rituals involved need to be gotten accurately and this means, there is a need to understand how this ritual is done in your various community.
