A Date With Mkpukpa Ochiọgụ

Mother nature works in mysterious ways and coincides are part of it. Someone texted me yesterday about getting a referral for Afa, I was busy so I delayed in responding. She texted back to tell me about how she met a man dressed like a traditionalist. So she summoned the courage to approach the man who directed her to someone for Afa.

Same way, a friend of mine came to my place and was telling me about an Alusi in Nnewi known as Mkpukpa Ochiogu who in those days doesn’t tolerate any form of ill-treatment on any Umu-enem woman. He said in such cases the deity would send a stern warning to the man and his family.

Later that day we decided to visit the deity, now to prove his story to me they set a motion that played out before me.

A few minutes after we got to Mkpukpa, the Isi mmuo beaconed on the woman to say her prayer. She knelt with a plate of kola, nzu, and edo and started crying. She couldn’t even utter any words. She cried and cried until the man(Isi mmuo), took over and said the prayers in her stead. Afterward, he directed her to Ogwugwu mkpukpa-daughter to Mkpukpa, she knelt and continued crying but was able to say a few words. When this was done the Isi mmuo used nsi-egbe to sediment her thoughts and intentions.

A few minutes after she left, the Ukpaka tree which represented Ekwensu Mkpukpa started to let loose its seed-we present could hear kpa kpa kpa kpa, and the resident there began to run commentary on what just happened.

Okwu Mkukpa.

It is really exciting to see progressive manifestations like this which also embodies cultural identity in terms of color dynamics.

After this my friend was called upon to present his intensions and it turned out he wanted to gift Udo Mkpukpa an Oji(staff) as a sign of goodwill. In the process of consecrating the bell he brought and other items, the Isi mmuo stepped out and called a guy, he knelt down and warned him that Mkpukpa told him to warn him against stealing any of those items. He said “She would kill you, if you try it”, the young boy smiled and said he’d not try it- Well who knows what set this in motion.

Awo Oma
Money for Awo Oma

At the end of the day when we were all about to leave, my friend performed a form of salaka called “Awo Oma”. People present shared the money and as we were about to leave, the Isi Mmuo came and asked me “Emekwara gi Awo oma”?, I smiled and said no but Akachukwu would do that for me.

He said Mkpukpa directed him to do Awo Oma for me,he took out a 500naira note and dropped it for me, i gladly and joyfully picked it up….still wondering what to do with that money.

My conclusion here is to let people understand our relationship with our native cum familiar primordial and try our best to embrace them as Isi mmiri.
