Women & marriage in the Igbo Culture

The high rise of domestic violence in our society is attributed to the perpetual need to adopt cultural values that lack authentic bearings within our social environment. These values are misrepresented, calculative, and anchored to bring division, therefore, leading to the destruction of the family unit and its values.

We spend time and resources acclimatizing ourselves to the western perception of marriage and family, women and marriage, etc. Whilst we’ve become acclimatized to the western definition of marriage and the roles of women in marriage, western society has moved on from these purported ideas, we dwell in these stereotypes.

We continuously parade our ignorance like a badge of honor , that we forget to look at our ancestral perception of marriage, an institution our ancestors referred to as “Ije Di”- this lacks no western interpretation.

Divorce is an integral aspect of Ije Di, this can be initiated by either a woman or a man when the situation and tenets of this argreement aren’t met, a dissolution can be initiated and the dowry or symbol of the dowry returned, in this case, broken.

This adoption of western perception has closed the indigenous reality, that a woman was initially buried in her father’s compound against what we currently have & practice “Ozu Nwada Anaghi Ato N’mba”. To uphold this culture, it has been symbolically twisted to the presentation of a female cow or goat after it comes “igba egwu umuada”  done by the living females in the family. 

I may be fixated on the aftermath, how about the prevention of deaths associated with domestic violence?

For a spiritual society like ours, we fear the repercussion of the dead, hence we avoid circumstances that materialize to “Okwu Nwaada”. But, knowing this doesn’t exclude human efforts such as; Ime ego utari or Inodu nwoke ana n’isi(Watch the YouTube video for an explanation), which are targeted towards curbing this menace.

It is therefore saddening that a people with this high regard for women and the institution of marriage has abandoned it and mock women who leave abusive situations. This adulteration is perceived in almost if not all aspects of our society with women as the receivers of this harsh reality. 

There is a need to reintegrate into our original interpretations and perceptions if we want to build a society where equity is our watchword.
