Halloween and Odo Masquerade Festival

Ancestral veneration is deeply rooted in numerous conventional and unconventional belief systems or religions. It is a way to show profound appreciation for one’s ancestral heritage or lineage which tethers their remnant to us the living.

Ancestral veneration is manifested in diverse ways based on indigenous cultural traits, for instance; Halloween, also known as “All Hallows Eve or All Saint Eve”. 

Halloween is celebrated on the 31st Of October, a day before all saints, hence “All Saint Eve- This is a catholic feast which celebrates the life of All Catholic Saints”. 

Originally, Halloween was an ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain” which inspired the tradition of lighting bonfires to ward off ghosts. This festival initially commemorated the Celtic New Year.

The Celts believed that New Year’s Eve was sacred and allowed spirits to return and roam the earth. The original festival featured people gathering to exchange stories of their deceased ancestors, tell fortunes, dance, sing, and be merry. 

In Igbo land, masquerades are generally regarded as Mmuo (Spirits), they are not generally perceived as the spirits of our ancestors except in Enugu where most communities such as; Ngwo, Nsukka, Iha-alumuona, celebrate the Igba-Odo festival.

Odo festival is a festival that celebrates the dead walking among the living. The masked masquerade “Odo” is perceived as the spirits of the dead ancestors returning to earth to visit their living families. This festival is performed at every 2 years intervals.

The Odo Festival is decorated with colorful masked masquerade which was weaved with Omu. The preparation of this festival is quite secretive and hidden from women and uninitiated males. The prayers and rituals are carried out by the elderly, the food is prepared by the women, and the young entertain with colorful displays of music and acrobats.

The festivals begin with the dramatization of their staying with the living and finally their agonizing departure and journey away from their loved ones, this final departure of the deceased is dramatized by wailing against the joyful cries felt at the beginning of the festival.
