It seems these days, everyone has a cosmic call, everyone refers to himself/herself as Nwa Mmiri, everyone’s cosmic call is directed towards Afa, and everyone can be anything even when they are not. It even goes to the point where everyone is suffering because they have a cosmic call, or can’t marry because he/she has a spirit spouse or has a malignant ogbanje spirit, yet this individual is either lazy or has a terrible character.
Amongst this kind of people that I mentioned, only a tiny percentage is actually being held back by supernatural forces, while others do not want to be held accountable for the way their life is turning out. Nonetheless, the rate at which most Ndi-Igbo are answering these cosmic-calls may have attribute to the high rate of shams especially under the category of Afa. These assumptions are mostly from the current Dibia’s whom people run to, in order to save themselves from any spirit tormenting them, when this happens, most Dibia blurt out Agwu and doesn’t give the necessary explanations.
In one of my discussions with a Dibia, he said; amongst 10 people that come for Afa, 7 are ordained Dibia/Ezenwaanyi but it’s not under compulsion that these people would sit and serve just as like me, they can engage in other works and periodically pay homage to spirits that ordained them. In my personal opinion, If majority of Ndi-Igbo whom Afa called Dibia engaged in personal research, then a whole lot of individual’s with these calls would choose to be on their own and not engage in things they are not prepared for, especially in their youth. This resolution would come when they actually have higher understanding of what Agwu and Dibia is- Check out Chi na Ezumezu.
For starters, the definitions of Dibia/Ezenwanyi can loosely mean an individual who is a professional, an expert in a field of study, or an esoteric field. We can call them professors/Ndi Okachamalu. While this translation can go both ways, Ezenwanyi loosely means, Eze di an Nwaanyi/Nnukwu Nwaanyi/ Nwaanyi ka ibe ya, a living example is Ngozi Chimamanda Adichie/Oby Ezekwesili. This loose interpretation simply means that not every Dibia/Ezenwanyi is a medium between the spirit and the living. The second interpretation of Dibia/Ezenwanyi is that through Agwu Dibia these individuals have access to cosmic forces, they may fall under the category of Dibia Afa, Dibia Mgborogwu, Dibia Ogwu etc.
Individuals in this last category are handpicked by a certain force such; as Chi, Alusi, Ndi-mmiri, etc, to act as their earthly emissaries, that’s why we call them “Okala mmadu Okala mmuo”. Without this special charge by cosmic forces, a Dibia/ Ezenwaanyi is no different from an ordinary person.
How do you know, you have a cosmic call?
Before Afa would reveal this to you, your dreams and early childhood behaviors are indicators of who you are. Other scenarios are;
Also, “support” this blog, if we’ve been helpful;
- Ndi-Igbo believe in “Ebe mmadu siri bia uwa”, as children this question have being answered numerous times through dreams; when as a child you perpetually dream of oceans, either big or small. Personally, I know it is the cause of my phobia for a large body of water.
- Many Dibia/ Ezenwanyi with cosmic affiliation have asserted that early in life before they took this mantle, they have see themselves in front of deities, either serving or they are offering sacrifices.
- Some others say that, they see themselves either praying for themselves or other people inside a familiar river, with Igbo spiritual items such as; Oji.
- Other claim to have being offered kolanut/ Nzu in their dreams.
- The most interesting is those that continuously see themselves in their past schools or level. Which is a clear indication of “Igba Oso Agwu”.
Although, these dreams may vary or could be an indication of other cosmic forces at play. They are indications of a cosmic call.
The first step towards answering this call is never to rush the process, because believe me, when you rush in you’d rush out. The process of becoming a Dibia takes time, knowledge and a certain level of preparation because of it’s accompanying “Nso”. The stewardship of a Dibia, isn’t a child’s play ground or an activity for the feeble minded. Many of our modern Dibia/Ezenwanyi do not understand these convictions, hence every nook and cranny has an Okwu Dibia and not an Okwu Chi which should exist in every Igbo household, but because Christian churches which we revert to as a model in terms of worship choose to popularize their business center by making it readily available, most of these Okwu Dibia becomes a business center as well, hence why it seem everyone is jumping into it and aberrating it.
Our proverb says; Dibia n’agba afa ofeke ina agba Uche, we also say; Uche ka eji eso mmuo. This means, learn how to ask the right questions such as; kedu mmuo kporo m oku, what area would this Dibiaship specialize on and cross-reference it with how your life is turning out. Perform simple rites such Ekwere m agwu and continuing leaning towards that part through Igba Oso Agwu and finally if truly you have this cosmic call, it would manifest itself.

More than ever, our people are becoming more self-aware and returning to Odinaani, therefore their is a need to feed the right information to our new adherents.
